Podcasting is a great way to ensure students have access to learning whenever and wherever it's convenient for them. It can also reduce the amount of time you spend talking and chalking in class.
This type of podcast could be used to convey information (like you would in class) but in the form of an audio recording saved as what is known as an mp3 file. You can then post these recordings on the internet (you can make it quite secure if you're a little shy...) where students can listen to them on their computers or download them to ipods or mobile phones.
To create an audio podcast you can use free software called "Audacity". This is already on your school laptop (if you're a BDSC teacher), however, if it isn't the video at this link will show you how to download and set it up - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TMMZa6gLNQ
Below is a podcast to show you how to use this programme to create audio recordings that can be saved as mp3 files. Have a look and give it a try. Your laptop most probably has an inbuilt microphone, however if not you can pick up a really cheap one (under $10) or ask your HOLA...
Check the information below the video for help with publishing your podcast so students can access it.
Now you've created the podcast you need to upload the file to the internet. One easy way to do this would be to upload it to your wikispace. Here is how you do it...
1. Click "edit" on the page where you want to upload the podcast.
2. When the tool bar pops up click the button that says "file"
3. When the window pops up, click the button that says "upload files"
4. Choose the file you want to upload and it will take a while and then pop up as a "widget" on the screen
5. Click "save"
6. A "player" should now appear on the screen. You should be able to press play and here your podcast playing.
